Google Password Manager now allows password sharing with family members, albeit in a limited way.
According to Android Authority, Google Password Manager now allows password sharing with family members, albeit in a limited way. “With this new feature, you can securely share passwords with your family group in Google Password Manager,” Google said in a support document. A password you share will appear as a copy ready to be used in your family members’ Google Password Managers.”
Google originally announced this feature on Safer Internet Day in February 2024, but it was finally rolled out with the Google Play Services update v24.20 in May 2024.
Password sharing is reportedly limited to family group members, so you’ll need to create a family group and add members to use the feature. If you have a family group, a “share” button appears as an option in Google’s password manager.
The new password sharing feature applies to those stored in Google Password Manager, the company’s service that stores your passwords and passphrases locally on Chrome and Android and is linked to your Google account. As of today, the new password sharing feature works on mobile devices, so it is not currently active for desktop devices.
You cannot use this feature with people who are not in your Google-approved family group, and you can share your password with a maximum of 6 people in the family group. Therefore, if you want to share a password with someone else, you need to share it in person using the “Nearby Share” feature, or use simpler or less secure methods.
