US-based Xscape Photonics’ investment round included Cisco Systems, Nvidia, Altair Engineering, Fathom Fund, Kyra Ventures, LifeX and OUP.

Xscape Photonics, a developer of laser technology for connecting chips in data centers, has received $44 million in investment. IAG Capital Partners led the company’s $44 million Series A investment round. US-based Xscape’s investment round included Cisco Systems, Nvidia, Altair Engineering, Fathom Fund, Kyra Ventures, LifeX and OUP.

The company said it will use the new investment to develop and ramp production of its laser-based LabriX data center connectivity technology.

Founded in 2022 by Alexander Gaeta, Vivek Raghunathan and Yoshi Okawachi, Xscape Photonics is developing a new technology for connecting chips in data centers. Essentially, it makes laser-based connections to enable chips such as graphics processors, or GPUs, to communicate faster and more efficiently. This technology can carry more data and use less energy than existing connections. Thus, it aims to support big data processing more effectively.

Xscape Photonics is developing systems that transmit data through light manipulation using a technology called silicon photonics. This offers solutions that consume less energy and generate less heat than traditional connections made with metal wires. The company aims for these laser-based connections to allow chips in data centers to communicate more efficiently, improving overall performance.

Due to the limited bandwidth of existing links, only a fraction of the chips’ potential can be utilized. Xscape Photonics’ laser-based links aim to overcome this problem by carrying more data.
