Alexis Barreyat, founder and CEO of BeReal, is stepping down and will be replaced by Aymeric Roffé, CEO of the Voodoo-owned social app Wizz.
BeReal, the social app that encourages users to share natural content in a short period of time, has been acquired by France-based app developer Voodoo for 500 million euros.
With this acquisition, BeReal’s founder and CEO Alexis Barreyat will leave his post. Aymeric Roffé, CEO of Wizz, the social app owned by Voodoo, will take over as CEO of BeReal. After the acquisition, BeReal will further innovate around new features and refocus on growth, according to Voodoo.
BeReal was founded in 2020 by Alexis Barreyat and Kévin Perreau. In 2022, the app’s star shone, but it quickly lost users. According to the information shared; The company, which had 15 million monthly active users in October 2022, was home to only 6 million monthly active users in March 2023. At that time, the company announced that it had 20 million daily active users. It seems that being natural on social networks has not been a favored trend in the long run.
To keep users on the app, BeReal has added new features to the platform. BeReal introduced private groups as well as bonuses that allowed users to post more than once a day. However, the added features contradicted the main idea of the app and were not well received by users. In addition to these features, the app launched the RealPeople feed in February, which shows posts from celebrities and brands. According to the information shared, even though BeReal focused intensely on features; user acquisition became stagnant.
On the other hand, Voodoo claims that BeReal currently has 40 million monthly active users. According to the information shared by Voodoo; more than half of these users use the app at least six days a week.
